Facelift

Recognized as one of the Best Facelift Surgeons In Maryland, Sheilah A. Lynch, MD specializes in face and neck procedures and has been awarded TOP DOCTOR for many years in both the Washingtonian & Bethesda Magazines.

Often frustrated, men and women of varying ages request a confidential consultation to seek options to make changes to the contour and appearance of their neck and jawline. As we age, many patients start to see loose skin and sometimes excess fat in the neck, which is often genetic. Dr. Lynch offers patients an extended neck lift that can restore and enhance the neckline and at the same time, reduce jowls and define the jawline and get rid of a double chin.

Generally, a facelift procedure is very different for patients in their 40s versus those in their 60s. The techniques used will depend on the laxity of their skin and the condition of the deep layers of the skin. Choosing the option of facelift surgery to address many of the concerns related to aging, starts by removing excess skin from your face and neck, restoring skin elasticity, tightening facial tissue, and smoothing wrinkles and folds.

A facelift, called rhytidectomy, is facial plastic surgery who’s primary focus is to address the natural aging effects on your face and neck. Aging causes the loss of skin & fat volume from decreased collagen and elastin, resulting in visible changes in your facial appearance. Aging shows the sagging skin of your lower face, weakened muscles, and soft tissue decrease, eventually forming jowls and blurring the jawline. Volume loss in the cheeks and bone reduction can reduce facial support. The triangular facial structure of youth reverts into a square shape as jowls form, and the midface volume decreases. Facelift surgery corrects these issues by tightening skin and muscles and repositioning tissues for a youthful, relaxed appearance.

The MACS lift (The Minimal-Access Cranial Suspension Technique) has a faster recovery than the Deep Plane facelift, as this procedure is less extensive. Just like the deep plane, the MACS lift also reverses many signs of aging to restore smooth and youthful facial contours. It is best performed on patients in the 40’s. Dr. Lynch applies the third suture in MACS-lifting: making midface-lifting simple and safe. The MACS Lift is an excellent option for people who have experienced significant weight loss and will you need a facelift after ozempic? Treating OZEMPIC FACE.

Frequently Asked Questions

Patients for a facelift typically include those who wish to refresh or correct the signs of aging in their face and neck, such as sagging skin, deep wrinkles, and loss of youthful contours. Most have:

Visible Signs of Aging

  • Loose or sagging skin in the lower face and neck.
  • Deep folds or creases between the nose and mouth.
  • Loss of jawline definition.
  • Wrinkles or excess fat deposits in the neck area (sometimes referred to as a "turkey neck").

It's important to note: a facelift doesn't treat lip lines, deep wrinkles, creases at the corners of your mouth, or folds at the corners of the nose. A facelift also does not correct the eye area or lift the brow above the eyes.

During the Surgery

Anesthesia

You’ll be given anesthesia to make your comfortable.

Incision Placement

Incisions are typically made in inconspicuous areas:

*Along the hairline at the temples.

*Around the ear, continuing behind the earlobe to the lower scalp.

*When restoring the neck, an additional incision may be made under the chin.

Repositioning and Tightening

* Dr. Lynch will reposition underlying facial tissues and muscles to lift and tighten sagging areas.

*Any excess fat may be sculpted, redistributed, or removed.

*The skin is draped over the newly repositioned contours, and excess skin is trimmed and removed.

Closure

*Incisions are closed with sutures.

*Bandages are applied to protect the treated area and minimize swelling.

Generally, swelling, bruising, and minor discomfort are expected after a facelift, with these symptoms occurring in the first 24 – 48 hours after surgery. You will be given medication to ease any discomfort you experience, along with a specialized compression garment to help minimize swelling. You will have a small drainage tube in place for 24 – 48 hours after surgery, which will then be removed in our office.

Getting Back To Your Routine.

If your recovery goes as expected, you can return to work approximately one week after your surgery. Because swelling and bruising are more noticeable for the first two weeks after surgery, downtime is recommended.

Usually, 6 months after surgery, the swelling will be gone and your results will look astonishing.

A facelift primarily addresses the lower two-thirds of the face, including the jawline, cheeks, and neck. It does not directly lift or improve under or above your eyelids. If you’re concerned about drooping or aging around the eyes, consider blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).

Yes, a facelift typically includes your neck, particularly if you're undergoing a Deep Plane facelift or a MACS facelift, as they both address sagging skin, fat deposits, and muscle laxity in both the lower face and neck. However, the extent to which the neck is treated depends on the type of facelift you choose and your specific concerns.

A facelift does not treat lip lines, deep wrinkles, or creases at the corners of your mouth or at the sides of the nose. Dr. Lynch offers injectables and aesthetic treatments that can help with these concerns.

Dr. Lynch discreetly places incisions within the hairline and inside or behind the ear so they are almost entirely hidden from view. The tissue beneath the skin is lifted into a more youthful position, and then the facial skin is gently re-draped minus the wrinkles. Fat injections are performed afterward if necessary.

As with any surgical procedure, there is always a potential for scarring. However, Dr. Lynch's techniques are designed to minimize the appearance of scars.
