WHAT IS A MACS LIFT?
MACS is an acronym for Minimal Access Cranial Suspension. It is very popular for treating the signs of aging or correcting the effects of weight loss in the neck, lower face, jawline, and chin.
Many patients start to see loose skin and sometimes excess fat in their neck, which is often genetic. Or, due to weight loss, they see a lot of excess skin hanging underneath their chin, and feel that nothing can be done about it.
Dr. Sheilah A. Lynch offers patients the surgical option of a MACS Lift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension Lift) to restore and enhance their neckline, reduce jowls, and define the jawline. Dr. Lynch also offers a variety of options for restoring the upper face, including eyelid surgery and fat transfer.
A MACS Lift can also be performed in combination with other procedures like a correction of the nose or an eyelid lift.
The MACS lift addresses sagging tissues in the neck, cheeks, chin, and around the nose. This surgical procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, whichever you prefer. It is an outpatient procedure, which takes about 2-3 hours to perform.
For your initial consultation, you will meet with Dr. Lynch to discuss your concerns and desired results. Dr. Lynch will examine you and take pictures of your face and neck, which will help plan your MACS facelift surgery.
Lastly, you’ll receive important instructions to prepare for your procedure, a quote, and an explanation of the results you can expect to achieve.
The MACS Lift procedure begins by creating small incisions in front of your ears and uses vertical lifting to achieve a more natural look. These incisions are in front of your ear and do not go behind it or into the scalp. Your facial muscles will be pulled gently into a tighter position and held in place by suspension sutures made in the deep tissue. Dr. Lynch will remove excess skin and tighten the muscle layer. Once the skin has been tightened, it is realigned, and she will close the incision.
You will go home with the head and neck wrapped in dressings, which are usually removed the next day. You will have a drain under the skin behind both ears to collect any fluid that would increase your post op swelling and discomfort. The drain will remain in place for one day and will be removed the day after surgery. Minimal initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Sutures are removed within 5 to 7 days. Bruising and swelling decrease to “socially acceptable” levels in 7 to 10 days.
The final result of a facelift procedure is evident in 3 to 4 weeks or sooner, with continued improvement for several months.
You will leave with a compression bandage that you will have to wear to help reduce post-operative swelling. This is usually worn night and day for at least five to seven days and then only at night for a longer period. It’s important to follow instructions to ensure proper recovery.

A facelift may also be desirable if you have the appearance of jowls and deep creases between the base of the nose and the corners of the mouth, or have developed facial and neck wrinkles. A facelift may also be helpful if you believe you lack youthful chin and neck contours and/or feel you have a tired facial appearance.
This procedure is intended to give you a more rested and youthful contour to the face and neck.
Men and women of varying ages are often frustrated by the changes to the contour and appearance of their face, neck and jawline. Changes with age, weight loss or gain may include loose skin and muscle, and sometimes excess fat in the neck. Dr. Sheilah A. Lynch offers a variety of options for rejuvenation of the entire face, including injectables, browlift, eyelid surgery, fat transfer to lips and cheeks and full face lift. Together with Dr. Lynch, you can decide which procedures she will perform in order to enhance the symmetry of your face.
As you become older, the effects of aging show themselves on your lower face & neck, adding in the factors of gravity, sun exposure, and stress taking their toll. As your facial skin stretches, the jawline loses its straight contour, and facial lines appear between the nose and mouth. Most noticeable is the skin around the neck losing its elasticity, and excess folds of skin form.
With some patients, Dr. Lynch will add fat (fat transfer) to replace your lost volume. Facial fat transfer or fat grafting restores attractiveness by filling in cheek contours and adding volume at the chin and under the eyes. It can treat mild sagging skin, and reverse some aging changes in the face.
A MACS Lift will restore the youthful appearance of your lower face and neck by:
* Re-tightening the skin from mid-face to the lower section down the jawline and underneath your chin. It will effectively erase the appearance of jowls and other wrinkles, like those around your nose and mouth.
* Corrects the muscular structure beneath your skin, making this procedure effective and giving you long-lasting results. Your lower face and neck will return to a normal, natural appearance.
* This lift combats the effects caused by sudden fat loss, creating laxity of the skin on your face and neck.
* The MACS lift has a shorter recovery. Because it can be completed with smaller, minimal incisions, patients experience less swelling after their procedure, which allows them to return to their usual schedules sooner than a traditional lower face or neck lift.
*Leaves little to no scarring.
*Restores your naturally youthful look without looking like something was “done.”
