While many of our patients express a desire to increase the size of their breasts, some prefer the opposite.

For some women, heavy, large breasts are a constant source of physical and psychological discomfort. Many of our patients  experience frequent neck, back and shoulder pain.

If you have have difficulty finding clothing that fits, do not engage in physical activities, and are self-conscious due to the unwanted attention associated with your chest size, please call us today, we can help you.

Choosing Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery is a good choice if you have large, dense, heavy breasts, causing back, neck, and shoulder pain, poor posture, bra strap groves on your shoulders, and chafing under your breasts. You may also want this procedure if you have an excessive breast size, which may make you feel less attractive and hurt your self-confidence. If your large breasts interfere with normal daily activities or with exercising, a breast reduction may be a helpful option to consider.

Breast Reduction is intended to give you a more attractive contour with a smaller breast size and the freedom from health problems associated with excessively large breasts.

Your first visit with Dr. Lynch will include an interview and a physical exam. She will discuss your concerns about having large breasts, as well as what your hopes of achieving with surgery are. You should mention the areas of pain (if any), whether you get rashes, and if your bra straps tend to cut into your skin. You will also need to let her know of any pain medication you have taken or physical therapy you have received to help with these issues.

During the exam portion of your consultation,  Dr. Lynch will evaluate:

  • Height and width of your breasts
  • Width of your chest and ribcage
  • Your current cup size and the quality and distribution of the breast tissue
  • Quality of your skin and presence of stretch marks
  • Diameter of the nipple and areola, as well as their position on the breast
  • Potential cysts, lumps, or other masses

Dr. Lynch then can determine how much breast tissue will need to be removed.

The Procedure

Breast reduction is done under general anesthesia. Incisions are made around the pigmented area (the nipple areolar complex) and extend vertically below the nipple and in the fold under the breast. The nipple areolar complex is moved upward to the desired location, and the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed resulting in a smaller breast size.

Your Recovery

The incisions are covered with light dressings, and the breasts are placed in an elastic bra for 48 hours. You may shower 48 hours after surgery, after which you will switch from the elastic bra to a full-coverage racerback bra. The full-coverage bra is worn for six weeks. This bra helps to contour the breast during initial healing. Initial discomfort subsides over the first few days and can be controlled with oral medication.

After Your Surgery (Post)

Some patients return to desk work within 3 to 4 days, while others require 7 to 10 days.

Generally, seven to ten days after surgery, most of the swelling has left, and any pain will be greatly reduced if not gone altogether. The tightness in your breasts you feel after surgery will have relaxed greatly. Driving is also usually safe and comfortable within seven to ten days of your surgery. We are always here for you, and you can call or text Dr. Lynch’s cell phone at any time with questions or concerns. Let us know how we can help.

It is vitally important to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon with specific experience in breast reduction. Breast reduction procedures are very detailed and advanced, as they require specific surgical skills combined with artistry.
