An arm lift, or brachioplasty, can tighten, lift, and smooth the skin and tissues of your arm for a more sleek and sculpted shape. Body Contouring Expert  Dr. Sheilah A. Lynch, MD, is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Maryland with extensive experience providing upper arm sculpting for patients all over the Eastern Shore.

If you have excess fat or skin on the upper arms or both due to weight loss, aging, or genetics, you may consider an upper arm lift (also called Brachioplasty). An arm lift is a good solution to reduce or eliminate excess skin. Combined liposuction, upper arm sculpting is very popular at Lynch Plastic Surgery.

When considering an arm lift or liposuction as a great option for having shapely arms, you need to know that they are two different procedures that improve arm appearance. Both have a different focus and approach.

An arm lift, or brachioplasty, tightens, lifts, and smooths the skin and tissues of your arm for a more sleek and sculpted shape. The focus is on removing the excess sagging skin and attached fat to improve the upper arm's size and contour. An arm lift has a longer incision extending from the underarm to the elbow.

Arm Liposuction removes pockets of fat from the upper arm. It requires few and smaller incisions and doesn’t tighten the skin.

In many cases, both procedures are performed together for the best results. An arm lift can be helpful for people who have lost a significant amount of weight and whose skin can't contract over their smaller arms. Arm liposuction effectively removes fat deposits that don't respond to diet and exercise.

Some patients who are undergoing upper arm lift may require liposuction of the upper arms to get a better result. Liposuction may be performed alone if there is minimal skin and you have good skin quality.
Weight loss patients who reach their ideal body weight usually do not require liposuction. Those with excess skin that has not retracted to its normal size may require an arm lift and liposuction combination.

Your Consult

During your initial consultation, you and Dr. Lynch will work together to discuss your concerns and desired results. Dr. Lynch will examine you as well as take photographs to help with the planning and performing of your arm lift surgery.

Finally, you’ll receive important instructions to prepare for your procedure, a quote, and an explanation of the results you can expect to achieve.

The Procedure

An upper arm lift is usually done under general anesthesia. To remove the unwanted skin, an incision is required that runs from near the elbow into the armpit. The incision is placed in the most inconspicuous location (inner arm toward the back), but some scarring will always be visible.  Some patients who are undergoing upper arm lift may require liposuction of the upper arms to get a better contour. If there is minimal skin excess and the patient has good skin quality, liposuction may also be performed alone. Dr. Lynch may suggest performing upper arm liposuction or an extended arm lift.

Your Recovery

After your arm lift surgery, the upper arms are placed in an elastic arm sleeve garment to reduce swelling. Initial healing occurs in 10 to 14 days. Swelling and bruising gradually disappear over 3 to 4 weeks depending on your skin and the amount of liposuction performed. Most of the swelling is gone in 3 to 6 months. The scars fade in 6 to 12 months depending on your skin type.

After Your Surgery (Post)

You will leave with a compression bandage that you will have to wear to help reduce post-operative swelling. This is usually worn night and day for at least five to seven days and then only at night for a longer period. It’s important to follow instructions to ensure proper recovery.

Arm Pit Fat Liposuction

A common question that a lot of our patients have is, “Can this armpit fat be exercised away?” Unfortunately,  the answer is no. Even though countless exercise programs claim to help you “tone” the armpit area, but truthfully, that excess fat really just needs suctioning out so it’s gone forever (once the fat cells are removed, they can no longer come back). You can’t tone away the axillary roll.

Common Causes Of Fat Under The Arms:
Armpit liposuction is performed under anesthesia. Dr. Lynch uses a cannula tube to drain the fat through small incisions your armpit areas. Fat is removed by 1-2 tiny incisions (2-3 millimeters) hidden in each armpit crease or near the fold under the breasts. The overall effect looks awesome when combined with a breast lift /reduction procedure.

Liposuction of the upper arm produces more permanent improvement in the contour and proportion of the arm. Dr. Lynch creates a flattering shape to the arm which is another goal of liposuction.

Liposuction of the arms is a great option for those who have subcutaneous fat in their upper arms which will not go away regardless of changes to diet and exercise. Most patients who have achieved their weight goal, and their arms have become an issue, choose an arm lift combined with liposuction to give them a tightened more youthful appearance.

Improved techniques such as ultrasonic and power assisted liposuction allow for larger amounts of fat removal with less down time. The tumescent technique, or filling the area that will undergo liposuction with fluid prior to suctioning fat, has allowed for less blood loss, less bruising, and therefore a faster recovery.

Your arm lift procedure is performed under general anesthesia. This provides safety and comfort. Small suction tubes (cannulas) are inserted through very small incisions at the elbow and armpit area where the after surgery scar will be less conspicuous. Fat is then removed by applying suction to the cannula.

A compression sleeve garment must be worn to cover the treated ares. Compression is advised for about a month to reduce the swelling and to promote skin shrinkage and contouring. Initial discomfort is controlled with oral medication. Bruising and swelling usually subside in 2 to 4 weeks. The final result takes shape over 2 to 3 month.

The Images Above Are Good Examples of Extended Brachioplasty or Arm Lift. This is a great option for patients who have had major weight loss. An extended arm lift is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper arm and chest wall. You can be a good candidate for an extended arm lift if you have large amounts of skin or fat that hang beneath your arms and extends into your underarms and the sides of your chest.

The excess skin on your arm extending into your armpit and onto the lateral chest wall can be addressed simultaneously with extending the traditional arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) from elbow to armpit further onto the lateral chest wall.

In a traditional arm lift, the incision is from the elbow to the underarm. In an extended arm lift, the incision goes along the underarm and onto the side of the chest. This extended procedure allows the removal of any excess skin and fat that creeps onto the chest itself. It ultimately allows more skin and fat to be removed. This is frequently necessary when a patient has lost large amounts of weight.
