Maryland Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Sheilah A. Lynch, leading expert in aesthetic surgical procedures, with a specialized focus on facial, rhinoplasty and nose reshaping techniques.

Rhinoplasty has always been a very popular cosmetic surgery procedure that can give you the nose you have dreamed about. It can also improve your appearance and how you breathe. .

Often referred to as a “Nose Job”, a  rhinoplasty can be one of the most complicated surgical procedures demanding the highest level of expertise. When performed properly, it is also one of the most gratifying procedures for both our patients and Dr. Sheilah A. Lynch. As a leader in facial aesthetics, Dr. Lynch has years of experience performing rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty, and non-surgical nose treatments.

Nose surgery can have a life-changing effect on your appearance. Dr. Sheilah A. Lynch,  can create a more appealing nose that brings greater harmony to your overall facial features and increases your self-confidence.

During your consultation, she will listen to your expectations and discuss how to reshape your nose to enhance your facial features best.

Most patients have always felt self-conscious about the size or shape of their nose or nostrils, and Dr. Lynch realizes how difficult and painful that self-consciousness can be because the nose is the centerpiece of your face.

Through rhinoplasty, Dr. Lynch can make any number of alterations. She can change the size, angle, or bridge of your nose, your nostril width, or straighten a crooked nose.

Rhinoplasty can alter the way you perceive yourself, giving you more balanced contours and a more shapely nose.

Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping surgery) is performed for cosmetic reasons or functional improvement (example: better breathing)

Good candidates for surgery generally are:

Unhappy with nose shape, size, or symmetry
Hump on the bridge (dorsal hump)
Wide or bulbous nasal tip
Crooked or asymmetrical nose
Wide or flared nostrils
Nose too large or small for facial balance

Functional Reasons

Breathing issues due to nasal structure (e.g., deviated septum)
Chronic nasal congestion or sinus problems
Previous nose injury causing deformity
Sleep or snoring problems related to nasal blockage

General Health Requirements

Good overall health – No uncontrolled medical conditions.
*Non-smoker (or willing to quit temporarily) – Smoking affects healing.
*Fully developed facial bones Typically age 16+ for females, 18+ for males.
*Realistic expectations  Understanding that results should enhance facial harmony, not create perfection.

After your surgery, the first day following, should be spent resting. Cold compresses can be used to reduce swelling around your face, especially the eyes. Initial discomfort is relieved by oral pain medication.

Around the 4th or 5th day after surgery, the nose splint and stitches can be removed. After about a week, swelling and bruises will subside. If you have a desk job, you can return to work after only a few days.

For the first week or two, any activity that raises blood pressure should be avoided.

Blowing and rubbing the nose should be avoided for one month. After eight weeks, you should recover fully and the improved proportions of your face will only enhance your beauty.

Minor residual swelling will resolve over the first year and final results are considered achieved at one year.

Depending on Dr. Lynch's assessment, your rhinoplasty surgery will involve one of the following procedures:

  • Reducing the nasal bridge or building it up with a cartilage graft
  • Sculpting the tip of your nose
  • Refining your nostrils
  • Straining the septum or reducing oversized turbinates to address the appearance and breathing function of your nose

Sometimes, an implant or cartilage from another part of the body may also be added to obtain your nose’s final shape.

Since most surgical nose reshaping procedures are done inside your nose, usually, there are virtually no visible incisions or scarring.

For your safety and comfort, your nose reshaping cosmetic surgery will be performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.

Dr. Lynch will either make an incision up inside your nostrils to access the framework (Closed Rhinoplasty) or make and incision on the skin between your nostrils called the collumella (Open Rhinoplasty). Dr. Lynch may graft cartilage from other areas of your body (such as your nasal septum, ear, or, in rare cases, rib cartilage) to your nose. She will then reshape your nose and cartilage to create the shape you desire.

At the end of your surgical procedure, Dr. Lynch will apply taping and a protective splint over your nose.

These are left in place for seven days. Your nose may also be packed with light gauze for five days. The placement and removal of the packing are generally painless.

Following your surgery, swelling and discoloration of your nose and bruising around your eyes are very common. The swelling and bruising begin to dissipate on the fourth or fifth day.

Although the rhinoplasty results may not show until a year after your surgery, most of our patients see a noticeable difference in the appearance of their noses and get an idea of what the outcome will look like around 3-6 months after their rhinoplasty, with most of the initial swelling gone by the four-month mark.

The final results of your rhinoplasty surgery will be long-lasting. While initial swelling subsides within a few weeks, it may take up to a year for them to finalize.

Liquid Rhinoplasty – Also Called Nose Reshaping Injections.

Minor nasal deformities can be treated in the office with injectable materials such as Radiesse (calcium hydroxyapatite). This injectable material, placed under the skin by injection, can often change the nasal profile by filling in a low area or camouflaging a hump deformity or irregularity.

The changes made with injectable fillers such as Radiesse are not permanent. The filler material will dissolve at approximately eighteen months.
