Generally, a vertical facelift procedure is very different for patients in their 40s versus those in their 60s. The techniques used will depend on the laxity of their skin and the condition of the deep layers of the skin. Choosing the option of facelift surgery to address many of the concerns related to aging, starts by removing excess skin from your face and neck, restoring skin elasticity, tightening facial tissue, and smoothing wrinkles and folds.
In the beginning, when facelift surgery first became popular, the skin of your face were pulled tight, however, the muscles underneath were not repositioned or moved. Because the muscles were left unaddressed, most facelift results gave patients a pulled look. As facelift surgery began to improve, plastic surgeons starting to consider the muscles in the face as they studied the way the face ages and the anatomy of facial movement involved in the process. One of the more recent developments in facial surgery is the vertical facelift, a procedure that incorporates the way in which the muscle structure under the skin moves and reacts.
This complex system works together, operating the muscles and nerves that control your facial movements, allowing you to smile, frown, laugh, and show emotions in your face. A vertical facelift works with the SMAS system to give a lift complementing the movement of your face, giving better and longer-lasting results, as well as maintaining your natural, youthful look, while avoiding the over done, pulled look.
A vertical facelift was designed to recreate a youthful facial appearance by targeting several key areas of your face and neck that show signs of aging. By targeting the deeper layers of facial tissue, Dr. Lynch can reposition sagging skin, muscles, and fat in a way that reflects your natural, younger years.

The short answer is Yes, taking Ozempic and other weight loss medications can have an effect on post-vertical facelifts and neck lifts. Many patients may be unaware of how prescription weight loss medications could impact their results. Medications such as Ozempic (semaglutide) or Tirzepatide are very popular for their effectiveness in treating weight gain. However, many are wondering about the potential long-term effects on past surgery. The rapid weight loss created by these medications can lead to significant muscle loss, potentially compromising the integrity and longevity of past cosmetic surgeries. Taking Ozempic may affect your past facelift and other plastic surgery results, please discuss this with Dr. Lynch at your consultation.
Recovering from a Vertical facelift, generally you will see swelling, bruising, and minor discomfort occurring in the first 24 – 48 hours after your surgery. You can take medication to ease any discomfort you experience, along with wearing a specialized compression garment to help minimize the swelling. A small drainage tube will be in place for 24 – 48 hours after surgery, which will then be removed in our office.
If your recovery goes as expected, you can return to work approximately one week after your surgery. Because swelling and bruising are more noticeable for the first two weeks after surgery, downtime is recommended.
Usually, 5 - 6 months after your surgery, the swelling will be gone and your results will look fantastic and natural.
A Vertical facelift primarily addresses the lower two-thirds of the face, including the jawline, cheeks, and neck. It does not directly lift or improve under or above your eyelids. If you’re concerned about drooping or aging around the eyes, consider blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).
Yes, a vertical facelift includes your lower face and neck, as this facial surgery will address sagging skin, fat deposits, and muscle laxity.
A vertical facelift does not treat lip lines, deep wrinkles, or creases at the corners of your mouth or at the sides of the nose. Dr. Lynch offers injectables and aesthetic treatments that can help with these concerns.
Dr. Lynch discreetly places incisions within the hairline and inside or behind the ear so they are almost entirely hidden from view. The tissue beneath the skin is lifted into a more youthful position, and then the facial skin is gently re-draped minus the wrinkles. Fat injections are performed afterward if necessary.
As with any surgical procedure, there is always a potential for scarring. However, Dr. Lynch's techniques are designed to minimize the appearance of scars.
