Ear Pinning (Otoplasty)

Ear pinning surgery, or otoplasty, is usually performed to set prominent ears back closer to the head. Many patients feel their ears are too big, when in reality the proportions are normal but the ear is set too far from the head and the surface is more visible from in front view or from behind the person. This appearance of a prominent ear may be caused by the lack of a fold in the upper ear cartilage, enlargement of the lower ear concha cartilage or both. The correct diagnosis is crucial to the surgery chosen and the final outcome.

Surgical correction involves an outpatient surgery either under sedation with local anesthesia or, more commonly, under general anesthesia. Bandages are removed in the office the next day and are replaced with a headband to support and protect the ears for an additional few days. Stitches are removed at 10 days after surgery.

Ear pinning surgery is often performed on children around the age of 5 or 6 when the ears reach full size. Many adults choose otoplasty (ear pinning) plastic surgery to address this life-long concern.
